What I learn as I walk down the long road of uncovering my privilege, confronting the ugliness of this nation, and seeing how deep the sickness of racism runs—is that as horrifying/grief-worthy as I think it is today, I still have no idea. It will take a lifetime to even begin.
Asking my white friends to keep listening to/learning from people of color, to not look away from the ugliness of this country or how it has benefitted you, and to leverage your circle of influence to speak hard words to other white people who need to hear them.
Yes, it will take a lifetime for us to even begin to understand, but we begin by understanding more than we did yesterday and then doing something productive with that knowledge today. This work will never be done, but do the work you can. People are worth it.
