Just watched the #AppleEvent segment on the new #iPadPro. Get ready, because I have a lot of thoughts. [Thread]
First off, I use my 12.9” iPad Pro (2018) as my primary computing device. When at home, I keep it on a stand above my #BrydgeProPlus ( @brydgetech) keyboard. This allows me to have better posture while sitting at my desk, while also having a portable setup that I can take with me.
I use my iPad for essentially everything involving both leisure and work: watching videos, playing games, reading books, answering emails, reading and highlighting PDFs, and writing assignments and papers.
It works seamlessly for about 95% of the stuff I need it to do. But every now and then, I need a computer program that my iPad can’t run, or a program that just runs better on a computer than than in app form. *cough* @Zoom *cough*
Having the #M1 chip and added CPU power in the new iPad Pros is great…if there’s software that takes advantage of it. My iPad’s A12X chip is still plenty powerful for everything I throw at it. I don’t need all that power to run iPadOS.
If #Apple were to turn iPadOS into, say, a full-fledged desktop OS that requires the M1 chip to run optimally, I’d consider upgrading. Until then, I’m perfectly happy with what I have.
Also, despite #Apple’s steep price point for its products, it has damn good accessibility options. I use Assistive Touch on my iPhone and Voice Control on my iPad. Before Apple added full mouse/trackpad support, I solely used Voice Control to navigate my iPad. #DisabilityTwitter
Unfortunately, the high price point means that these products are financially inaccessible to a lot of #disabled people. I’m grateful that I have access to funding for assistive technologies, but that involves a lot of paperwork and waiting time.
Not everyone can afford to wait six months or more to get the assistive tech they need. Not everyone has access to the funding in the first place, and that sucks. For typical people, technology is a luxury. For me and lots of #disabled people, it’s a necessity.
I don’t need the latest and greatest; I usually keep whatever devices I have either as long as they keep updating or until a feature is added that would greatly improve my usage (i.e. wireless charging for iPhone X). I don’t make the choice to upgrade lightly. [End thread]
