I want to be in the streets. But instead I’m where I need to be right now—in Durango City Council meeting. No doubt inspired by Coloradans in Boulder & Centennial, Durango neighbors are working to flip their CC who voted to oppose SB-62.

Feeling a little relieved that city council turned off our video bc I definitely just ugly snotty cried at strangers for 3 minutes, instead of reading my prepared remarks as planned.

I’m not even embarrassed at this point. proud of myself for trying to fight through my tears.
Of the 10 people who spoke to Durango City Council tonight about SB21-62, all 10 spoke in support. No idea if that will sway the council, but I’m so thankful.

This is the work.

Paul, Kirby (?), Brian, Donna, Lynn…to all our friends in beautiful Durango—THANK YOU.
Durango City Council is now discussing SB21-62. Mayor notes that 2 weeks ago after a 4-1 vote Durango cc sent a letter to the legislature at the request of their police chief to oppose SB-62. Police chief is back tonight. Only CM Noseworthy voted No. She’s speaking now.
Curious that Durango city council invited their police chief, yet I don’t see their sheriff here. Their sheriff is one of the law enforcement officials in Colorado who supports SB21-62 and has been an active part of supporting this bill. Sheriff is the one in charge of the jail.
Mayor Pro Tem Kim Baxter wants her police chief to have the opportunity to speak again.

Because truly that’s what’s missing on a day like today—more cops.

Durango Mayor Brookie doubles down on his decision to “support local law enforcement.” (and oppose SB21-62)
Durango police chief is adamant that yes we arrest too many people but he opposes any law that would force him to arrest less people.

“Violent people don’t always commit violent crimes. We know these people.” —his justification for wanting to arrest ppl who don’t commit violence
Police can’t even keep their lies straight. Usually they complain that SB21-62 provides too much discretion. Tonight police chief claims it doesn’t give them enough discretion. Says “things like that” [police abuses?] don’t happen in Durango.
