thread on the meaning behind the names of the eleven harbingers of genshin impact because i don't have much else to do.
the names of the eleven harbingers refer to masks of the 'commedia dell'arte', a kind of professional comedic theatre based mainly on improv (despite character entrances, exits, and some jokes being scripted) dating back to Italy in the 16th century.
tartaglia (tar-tah-yi-ah, yes you don't pronounce the 'g' my dear genshin devs) is the mask of an old man, myopic and clumsy. also, he stutters a lot, and that's where his name originates from: the double 'ta' in 'tartaglia' reminds stuttering. he's usually in love.
La Signora (literally 'The Woman', although signora has a more similar nuance to the english word 'Mrs') wife to Pantalone, she's a mature woman unafraid to flaunt her stuff. she wears too many fashionable items all at once as she's very rich, thus making her look quite excessive
Scaramouche (Scaramuccia). I love how they chose this mask for genshin's scaramouch, cause the original mask represents a character who's a ... serial bullshitter. he's also quite arrogant and boastful (without reason). He wears black mirroring Spanish troops' uniforms.
Il Dottore (the doctor). He loves good food and speaks lots of language, including Latin, which he likes to use totally out of context. He's talkative and quite pretentious.
Pulcinella is by far one of the most famous masks of la commedia dell'arte. People up to this day dress up as him during Mardi Gras (Carnival). he's lazy, ironic, impudent and quite an opportunist. he appears in genshin roadmap video where u can see the similarities with the mask
i said eleven but the other barbingers are yet to be seen so there's no point in talking abt them
also it's like 1am in Italy so I'll just end this here. there may be some discrepancies with other versions, the masks followed a process of mutation as they were interpreted by different actors + the performances were mainly improvised. anyway hope you enjoy byeee
oh yes there's no real image of la signora's mask cause she wasn't a very popular character, she at times was combined with another mask, Rosaura just to give you an idea

ok since this is making numbers, the wikipedia page of genshin tells me that the remaining harbingers are going to be Pantalone (a rich greedy merchant), Sandrone (farmer unhappy with his social status who tries to flaunt his Italian language to look more intelligent to no avail)
Capitano (lit. captain, one of the most ancient masks. a braggart soldier that mirror Spanish troops and mercenaries that invaded italy at the time), and Pedrolino (aka Pierrot, a servant who's cunning and sly who's fundamental to commedia dell'arte performances)

the pronunciation of tartaglia requires a further explanation. the g is actually present but it is not an hard sound (e.g. gloss), it's a soft sound that's very difficult to pronounce for non italians, similar to the double L sound in the Spanish tortilla.
