The second day of the inquiry into One Nation’s Mark Latham’s bill is starting now - warning as per yesterday that there will be some appallingly transphobic rubbish so mute this thread if needed. Watch live: https://www.parliament.nsw.gov.au/Pages/webcasts.aspx #nswpol
First panel includes Binary Australia which is the organisation created to oppose marriage equality which then pivoted to an anti trans agenda
The panelists talking about young people being taught about the existence of trans people as “not true” is rubbish. Some trans people are very wonderful but they are hardly mythical beings whose existence is in doubt?
Domestic Violence NSW now telling us the impacts the bill would likely have on the safety of teachers and students - it is not consistent with the evidence about how to reduce violence
Dr Tania Ferfolja telling us that an ongoing problem is the lack of professional development for teachers to respond to and support sexuality and gender diverse students.
Dr Jacqueline Ullman arguing it's important for students to be exposed to diversity in their schools - this is protective for them and also improves social cohesion more generally
Dr Damien Riggs saying there is a significant evidence teachers want to support their students but have to also deal with the views of the Principals and the school body. Teachers know that fostering inclusion for children is essential for academic outcomes.
We've also got a detailed submission from the Australian Psychological Association about the harm that would be inflicted on children by this bill, and that it would make it impossible for them to properly do their job and support children.
Hearing from Dr Jacqueline Ullman that if young people don't have access to trusted information about gender and sexuality through trusted adults like teachers then they will turn to online sources which will often be inappropriate for their developmental stage.
Kevin Donnelly is talking about neo-Marxism which is apparently somehow responsible for trans people existing?
Dianna Kenny talking about affirming trans kids as transgender folly brought about by the transgender lobby. This is obscene and she should not be permitted to slander trans children and their supporters in a Parliamentary committee.
They keep calling being trans a "social contagion" but apparently this is not a social judgment of any kind? This is disgraceful. Latham calling me an abomination for pointing this out.
Dianne Kenny says: Delinquent groups, gangs, follow the same pattern of infection (as trans people)

This is marginalising and discriminating against trans children.
She says a tiny fraction of young people are "genuinely trans" the rest are "in the thrall of the trans lobby and have serious mental health issues".
Her position is rejected by the peak body for psychologists in Australia. She also disagrees with the Human Rights Commission, the Commissioner for Children and Young people. She says we need to look at the ideology and not acceptance.
Lunch break now. Back at 12.45.
We not have the Council of Catholic School Parents NSW/ACT and Catholic Schools NSW who support Latham's bill. We note the Catholic Diocese of Parramatta which opposed the bill was not called as a witness despite our requests.
Their main interest today is in ensuring Parental Primary is core in education - the rights of parents to remove their children from education relating to sex and sexuality seems the main issue.
The witness says: "There's nothing in the catholic church that would support discriminatory practices in schools"
When students in Catholic Schools identify as trans the label that applied to them by the institution is "gender dysphoria" - this is a medical diagnosis, not the identity they are sharing. They see trans identification as a problem.
They don't recognise that this is damaging to children. Apparently what is damaging is affirming these kids, despite the large amount of data which shows affirmation is life saving.
Given the history of the Catholic Church and schools would you support the right of a parent to remove a child from a consent class?

He refuses to answer the question.
Here’s a nice picture of me with Teddy Cook for a timeline cleanse 🙏
Now we have the NSW Teachers Federation and the Independent Education Union.
The Independent Education Union says the documentation required to satisfy the bill would take teachers away from core work of teaching for little sensible return.
Teachers Fed - we have 830,000 students in our classrooms each day who raise a number of complex issues. Teachers professional judgment and expertise enable them to deal with this. They are mandatory reporters and work with parents to resolve issues with children as needed.
Teachers Fed - if a student confides in a teacher and the teacher cannot properly support them then they will lose their trust. This can mean a child will not disclose and may end up in a violent home for instance with no trusted adult to help them.
The Independent Education Unions report that teachers have been worried about teaching things like climate change because of parental responses - this has led to a chilling effect on teaching.
We've now got the Council for Civil Liberties, Australian Lawyers for Human Rights and the Law Society.
ALHR raising the international obligation to provide children with informative material on sexual and gender diversity - which the bill breaches.
We've now got the Education Department, NESA, the Advocate for Children and Young People and The Office of the Children's Guardian. Final panel for today!
Important evidence here about young people’s voice - they all want this taught in schools and gay and trans kids supported.
Their joint submission on this is here and well worth a read - young people's voices too often are ignored in this place: https://www.parliament.nsw.gov.au/lcdocs/submissions/70744/0017Advocate%20for%20Children%20and%20Young%20People%20(ACYP)%20and%20Children%27s%20Guardian.pdf
That’s ended now ... 2 days of Parliament failing its basic obligation to keep young people safe ... but at least it’s ended for a bit. Thank you to everyone who has stood with the LGBTIQ+ community throughout this.
