Derek Chauvin being found guilty on all counts isn't justice. George Floyd is no longer here, but the conditions that allowed for his death are.
Neither justice nor accountability can be served through this process. A police officer slowly murdered a Black man while being recorded because the entire colonial social economic and legal basis of his country was set up for this to be a regular occurrence.
This colonial system occurred throughout the Americas-it precedes the advent of the US and therefore Canada is implicated too. We recall how #Ottawa police took Abdirhaman Abdi’s life.
Locally we note that @WRPSToday launched their #DiversityCruiser project on the first day of the Derek Chauvin trial. This Canadian attempt to distract from racism was an effort to maintain the status quo.
This trial engaged with stereotypes about Black men as threatening and superhuman in their ability to withstand physical force from police, like the beating of Abdirhaman, like the double-tasering of Mr Omer in #Kitchener.
There is no such thing as reasonable force. Racist systems continue to offer justification for our executions that render us superhuman or subhuman. This cannot be reformed and will be abolished.
In the absence of justice and accountability, we wish George Floyd’s family and loved ones whatever wellness and peace a loving community can bring them. 🖤🥀
