Part of institutionalisation in the military is coming to believe that following rules, just because they're rules, is inherently good. And by extension those acting differently are failing in some way.

>>
This can show up during transition into civi life leading to frustration that civis are lacking because they do not follow the rules. The truth is they follow their own rules that work for them because they are in a different environment. It's not less, it's just different.
>>
Importantly you're in that environment now. So the choice is do you insist that civis follow rules that belong to another place? Or do you stop to see if the old rules still work for you in this new environment, adapting as appropriate?
>>
One way might lead to being permanently angry and frustrated with civilians for breaking the rules. The other might just help you move forward with your new civilian life...

Adapt. Improvise. Overcome.
