For the lecturer line, the course load is 5/5. The salary is $30,000.
There is a need for faculty trained in professional and technical writing. I also know that $30,000 does not pay the bills.
I do know that the provost's office has been working on a promotion policy for NTT faculty (that got approved last year). This year, there is a policy under development for merit pay distribution for full-time NTT faculty.
I also wrote "lecturer" but the line, I believe, is classified as "Adjunct Assistant Professor" and with the new NTT policy, there is room for promotion.
There is no expectation of service. There are, however, NTT faculty who do service, and do get course releases to perform the service.
Let me add a correction, the salary is $35,000.
The courses a NTT faculty could teach, would range from first-year writing, technical writing, creative writing, and sophomore literature. HOWEVER, if a person trained in professional and technical communication applied for the line . . .
there is need for teaching upper-division, that is advanced technical writing courses.
For the advanced technical writing courses, there is no curricular oversight. You get the academic freedom to design your course in the way/manner you see fit.
For the introductory technical writing course, there are three "standard" assignments, with standard in quotes because faculty get flexibility in how they teach the content. But, if you want a syllabus, suggested schedule, and assignment sheets--we got that ready.
The technical writing and professional communication minor and certificate programs are growing, and we have A LOT of initiatives underway this academic year into the next.
If anyone knows of anyone that is looking for a NTT gig in professional and technical communication, and either lives in DFW or wants to live in DFW, and has some questions--please email me at [email protected]
