What is the usual number of hours of O2 that hospitals have at any given time? Who procures O2? How does the process work during normal times? How is it transported? What type of O2 was exported? What is the lead time to get requested amount of O2 normally? Who decides? Questions
Anyone got any answers? Who produces? What is their regular production rate? How quickly & to what rate can they ramp up if push comes to shove? What are the bottlenecks to rush additional O2? Where are they stockpiled & by whom? Who does forecasting & planning? More Qns.
Ok. Here's one factoid. O2 demand tripled. https://twitter.com/ANI/status/1384521479430098947?s=19
Do we have the industrial capacity to sustain a tripled demand for 2 weeks? Even with re-routing O2 from other purposes temporarily? What is the economic hit from this?
Here are some numbers. So we had enough excess capacity then?
Can you cite source for the graphic please?
Given these numbers, what's the bottleneck now to supply where needed? https://twitter.com/Gujju_Er/status/1384540307056775169?s=19
Great article with tons of numbers. Key-
"India had a production capacity of 7,127 MT of oxygen per day
On April 18, India's oxygen consumption touched an all-time high of 4,300 MT per day. Pre-COVID it was 850 MT per day and the previous peak was 3,100 MT on September 18, 2020"
So it isn't a case of inadequate production but a case of not enough means to get the Oxygen to hospitals at the rate they need.
So now question is who makes O2 cylinders? And can they ramp up? Can someone else like a steel factory making tubes or something divert to make a few thousand of these in a week? Because looks like a lot of refillers are sitting idle due to this constraint.
And Delhi, national capital doesn't have O2 production. Has to rely on neighbors. Dunno which is worse, capital not having the ability today after suffering in September last year or a state as large as Madhya Pradesh.
Both? Both.
Already installed -
Madhya Pradesh 5
Himachal 4
Chandigarh, Guj UK 3,
Bihar,Ktaka Telangana 2;
Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Haryana, Kerala, Maharashtra, Puducherry, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh-1
Imagine. For a pissant 200 crores!
162 PSA oxygen plants amounting to Rupees 201.58 crore. includes 7 years maintenance cost to start from the fourth year onwards after three years of warranty
4,880 mt, 5,619 mt and 6,593 mt of oxygen have been allocated to 12 states for Apr 20, 25 &30 for meeting projected demand
industrial cylinders allowed to be used for medical o2 after suitable purging. Similarly, N & Ar tankers will be allowed to be converted to O2tankers
HC pulling up Inox for diverting O2 to UP has more to it than it seems from the outside.“Every week, we get a supply programme letter from the Union government which tells us how much oxygen has to be provided to which medical facility. Since demand in Delhi has increased
And finally we have current demand numbers.
That is a massive massive jump! No wonder everyone is scrambling! https://twitter.com/LiveLawIndia/status/1384904692044648453?s=19
So we have extra-ordinary demand. Diversion of O2 from industries to meet this. With folks like Vedanta ready to augment. we have Inox saying that demand-supply mismatch is not the issue at all. Transportation to divert O2 is the prime issue.

Latest from PMO. Demand from 20 states is close to production capacity of 7,xxx MT. https://twitter.com/ANI/status/1385178696210812928?s=19
Plus these trains. Connecting steel plants to areas of need. Vizag-Mumbai. Bokaro-Lucknow. https://twitter.com/PiyushGoyal/status/1385174270175715330?s=19
The vizag train has reached Mumbai too. Wonder if the SC will give approval to the Vedanta plant in TN for making oxygen. That's a solid 1k mt right there. https://twitter.com/ANI/status/1385181882543865856?s=19

MP getting O2 from Chhattisgarh. Lack of production in MP getting showed up. https://twitter.com/ShaktiDinesh/status/1385150393080971265?s=19
UP adding more capacity. UP (near delhi already has installed capacity). Plus that train to bokaro steel city. Now this. Silver lining that something as important as this is getting built as max pace. https://twitter.com/ukshahi/status/1385258394089443332?s=19
MP rapidly adding capacity too. https://twitter.com/Patriot0610/status/1385294489862885377?s=19
More Guj capacity addition. 480 m³ /day at Palanpur. "equivalent to 70 Jumbo Oxygen Cylinders and shall meet the requirements of about 35 patients." https://twitter.com/ChaudhryShankar/status/1385291211255296007?s=19
Ahmedabad. Check the jump in demand once again.
"Sola Civil Hospital had a demand of roughly 50 lakh litres two months ago, but the demand has now risen to approximately one crore litres." https://twitter.com/Ourahmedabad1/status/1385156442244542466?s=20
IAF throwing their hat into the ring. Iirc these oxygen trains carried about 6 trucks. These bigass planes can carry the empty ones to filling stations a lot faster than trains. Return will have to be by train. Can get to mumbai from Vizag/Odisha in<1day. https://twitter.com/brajeshksingh/status/1385437387749085190?s=19
There is some squabbling with Telangana over supply of O2 from Sriperumbudur but right now things are ok.
"storage capacity was increased to 1,200MT at all major hospitals across TN during the first wave of COVID-19"-Dr. Vijayabaskar TN health min. https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/tamil-nadu/oxygen-diversion-not-at-our-cost-minister/article34380020.ece
Lucknow will get more O2 tomorrow helping things on that front. https://twitter.com/ANI/status/1385512963407192064?s=19
All this is post-facto. How much of a buffer of lox can you realistically stockpile?
Taking the TN example -
Current daily consumption: 240MT
Daily production: 400MT (1.67x)
storage:1200MT(3 days production, 5 days consumption)
If you get battered like Delhi with 3x demand,
you'll need other sources pretty much right from the start. Puts Delhi & every other city facing an oxygen supply managment issue into context.
Related: # of beds in ICUs at any given time with oxygen support in any major city/district hq vs demand right now needs to be seen.
If you've read this far you'll have understood how much adequate transport is a big issue. Part panic and part greed during a crisis can lead to hoarding of invaluable critical items. Like O2 cylinders. https://twitter.com/Aryan_warlord/status/1385649336424361987?s=19

Oh boy. This was not good. The Delhi situation as mentioned earlier, was about logistics and not production at all. https://twitter.com/barandbench/status/1385875766223589378?s=19
Acrimonious wouldn't even begin to describe the proceedings today. Bit more detail on this thread than the previous one but one thing seems to be clear. Delhi logistics are a bottleneck. https://twitter.com/LiveLawIndia/status/1385877294456086528?s=19
