Still on a quest to bike to a grocery store in Dartmouth. Last night I tried the Mount Hope multi-use path to Russell Lake. Forced to dismount 5 times (extra fun with a fake hip and slightly to-big-for-me bike) and maneuver around pedestrians wearing headphones.
Multi-use pathways don't work. Today I learned that Prince Albert will be getting painted, not separated bike lanes. And that the section of Portland Street close to downtown (which is part of a new planning process) is too narrow for cycling infrastructure.
Our city is old. We know that. But it's time for Halifax to get more imaginative about our transportation future.
New developments planned for Dartmouth are only going to make our roads more dangerous if we don't plan to get more people out of large single occupancy vehicles.
If Portland Street isn't wide enough for car traffic, cycling, and transit lanes, why should car traffic be automatically prioritized?
