thread of meanings behind chinese genshin names (liyue ones) because they’re so beautiful, and relate to each character’s personality. pls rt if u can to share this knowledge :)
魈 xiāo- his name means elf lol, or it can be translated as demon (mountain demon?) there are two components in his name, 鬼 (ghost), and 肖 (small, or looks like)
钟离 zhōnglí- zhong here is clock, and zhonglis name means time of departure. this can also be seen as referencing the taoism being zhongli quan, 钟离权, who was immortal and could turn stones into gold and silver coins
凝光 níngguāng- can be translated to condensed light. it can also mean to gather light. her official title, tian quan “天权”, means heavenly balance, or taking right of the heavens.
刻晴 kèqíng- in chinese, kè means engrave or carve, and qíng is sunny, or clear. ke can sometimes be used to quantify time, and means immediately, or right this moment. (with lì, it becomes 立刻, meaning immediately)
北斗 bêidôu- bêi here means north, dôu is part of the word fight, 斗争. however her name actually means the big dipper constellation, which sailors find the most useful for sea navigation
辛焱 xīnyàn- xinyans name directly translates to hot flames, or spicy flames(?), but it’s interesting because the last character 焱 yàn, is a very intense blade. it can be used to describe the light of a fires beauty
行秋 xíngqiū- a literal translation of this would be passing or progressing autumn. however this can also be read as to walk in autumn, with 秋 qiu, being autumn. 行 xing in this case is to walk or move
香菱 xiānglíng- the first character, 香 xiāng means fragrant, (or perfumed) and the second, 菱 líng is a water chestnut ( google it, it looks very cool! ). so together her name is fragrant chestnut
重云 chóngyún- can be translated as layers of clouds, or heavy cloud. (云 yún is cloud)
七七 qīqi- literally just seven seven, however this does have a meaning behind it. this date falls on valentines date in china (qixi 七夕, double seventh festival)
胡桃 hú táo- walnut... but there are several fun facts behind walnuts in chinese culture. for ex, walnuts were played with by emperors or elites, and over time it would give it a red shine, raising its value in terms of money. (walnut therapy) walnuts symbolise longevity
i know he’s not technically a liyue character, but since he plays such a large role in the liyue quests i wanted to add childe/tartaglia. i will do one for each of his aliases, because i find them very interesting
达达利亚 dádálìyà is just a transliteration of tartaglia. but the last character sounds like 鸭 (ya) meaning duck, and it’s become a joke in the china community
公子 gōngzî- childes name in chinese can mean young master, but also hints at childe being a carefree individual whos young and rich
