The best way I used to get into a new research field is to read a Master thesis

Master theses are more concise/focused than PhD theses. Also more detailed than publication articles

This worked quite well for me when i did a research project in nanotoxicology.

Reading a Master thesis on zebrafish embryos was also very helpful for my PhD by moving from terrestrial ecotoxicology (focused on invertebrates) to aquatic ecotoxicology (focused on zebrafish)
