it was when we got back from the market that I realized we wouldn’t have goodbye sex,
the whole trip happened in such a hurry and we didn’t have time to plan, run around and then have a goodbye moment.
still trying to buy time, I quickly emptied the market bag and started
repacking the provisions into her luggage. we didn’t know how long she’d be and because everything is money this days, we had decided she traveled with milk and milo, etc in her bag just so there would be something to eat all the time

“Come and sit for a minute” I say as I stood
from where I had squat, relieving my legs of the discomfort it had started feeling.
“No babe, I don’t have enough time” her reply got to my ears barely a second after my request left my lips, like she already prepared the answer even before I had asked.
“Okay” I smiled, trying to
swallow the sadness that was gathering in my eyes.
I walked to the hand of the three seater couch and sat there, the only couch in our little apartment where we had lived together for the past year.
I kept my gaze on her and occasionally moved it the the papers spread out on the
couch. she was trying to make sure all her documents was complete and they were after minutes of sorting. satisfied with her work, gradually, the papers on the couch started entering her file bag until there was just an empty couch with me on the right hand, looking and praying
that my girlfriend gets a moment so we can go over to the bed and lie down and maybe cry because I will miss her so much.

‘make sure you don’t forget anything’

that’s how to pack for a trip and my girlfriend with my input, did that. she made sure she didn’t forget anything.
and we did everything in good time so when the driver who was to take us to the airport arrived, we were ready.
“quick quick, we don dey late, put this one for booth”
I say to the driver as he greeted

“madam good evening”

Wetin dey worry this one I thought as he walks towards
the driver’s door.
“I say make you open booth Oga Akpan”

“Na for inside e dey open from” he replies me calmly unlike the hurried tone I had used on him.

“I’m ready” Olayinka rushes out from our black gate, almost knocking down her hand luggage that still sat on the floor
beside the car waiting for Oga Akpan.

the booth clicked and in a second Oga Akpan was beside me loading everything into the car.

it was when we sat down inside the car after locking up the gate, that it occurred to me, that we didn’t kiss.
We had not kissed.
I almost started
crying. I look ahead to the mirror Oga Akpan usually used to spy on us and watch the cars behind
to see if he’d notice if we kissed. he was either spying or a car was behind because our eyes met for a second in that small mirror.
I took my eyes from the mirror and turned my neck
facing my face right to look at Olayinka.
I smiled, but this time, the sadness in my eyes swallowed my smile and tears ran out freely, running down my cheeks like they had been on their marks for a long time.
“We did not kiss” I said.

“We did not kiss and we’ve left the house.”
