Mami Fina was my great grandmother (pictured above laughing with my mom), born 1916. She had 16 kids and helped raise my mom (her granddaughter) due to my grandmother’s passing when she was a toddler. Fina sent my mom to the US when she was only 7 to seek better opportunity.
This is my grandmother Candida, born 1928. She passed when I was only 5 but I always loved and felt close to her. She raised 11 children, including those that were not hers. She did not know how to read or write and was known for her quiet demeanor and her cookinghttps://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="💛" title="Gelbes Herz" aria-label="Emoji: Gelbes Herz">
This is my grandmother Sonia, who passed when my mom was only 2 in 1966. We don’t have photos of her but she was known to also be one of the most timid/quiet ones out of her 16 siblings. Although I never got to meet her, I know how much influence her memory has had on my mom.
This is my mom, Astrid. She has lived such a hard life and continues to beat the odds. Without her mom, she came to the US at 7, lived in NYC and eventually moved to Jersey City. She began saving to pay for my education before I was even born. I honor her and my legacy.
