ok so i rewatched ride or die (2021) my final review/verdict.. anyone calling this a bad movie is simply lying. look up TW, themes, tags on a film before watching to know if you will be comfortable w the themes portrayed & explored. turnin this into a discourse- #rideordienetflix
abt male gaze/director is just an excuse to hate on it, everything abt it is distinctly japanese culture/cinema, the language used/the way certain things are portrayed is mainly a result of that as the manga & script were written by women. It may have bn made w lgbt audience-
in mind but in the end this is fiction & a vision of the filmmaker.. its thought provoking, you either like it or not, that doesn& #39;t make it bad, its nothing personal or attack on lesbianism. characters/movies/stories/art like this should have space to exist bc i honestly dont-
wanna be stuck w the same boring stuff we bn getting lately, we shouldn& #39;t only be allowed to like (1) specific thing / version of wlw rep, if thats only what wlw rep is allowed to be then we will never move forward. we can have certain expectations but also wlw stories should-
depict all these different cultures, genres & forms of expressions, they dont have to always tick all these boxes of what a perfect rep is, some stories are messy, wlw can & should also exist in these stories, it doesn& #39;t always have to be a social commentary & education on what-
lesbianism is or isnt, struggles of lgbt etc i know ppl calling this movie lesbophobic has to do w it being qwoc/"foreign" film & lesbian fandom twitter loves either ignoring or tearing apart qwoc stories, & not letting ppl see & decide for themselves, so even qwoc would get-
caught up in this collective discourse / fake outrage & that literally ruins the experience for everyone. so the double standards, if "lesbophobic" yt lesbian films w byg trope & miserable lesbians are allowed to exist & even get hyped w/out anyone screaming abt how it was the-
worst exp of their lives then qwoc films w similar themes should also get the same treatment, they shouldnt get collectively downvoted & trashed, these high standards shouldn& #39;t be placed on them, no one should be made to feel bad for liking & appreciating them, or told they& #39;re-
defending "lesbophobic" films. ppl here are too comfortable w this hypocrisy & racist double standards, it has to stop & if not (atleast) i will keep calling it out, i dont get tired doing so.
