i started learning to code properly because i was pissed off.
y'all know i used to run a restaurant, right?
In a good month, my restaurant used to do about $12k in delivery revenue alone (after the platforms' 35%+ cut).
This means ~$6k/m went to the platforms.

$6k is a HUGE sum for a small, neighbourhood restaurant. We could've hired 2-3 more staff with that money.
Still, we were on every platform available because we felt like we had no choice. The food/tech scene was changing (circa 2015-16); we needed to keep up. [2/9]

True enough, food delivery became ubiquitous in a very short time.
Did it bring in revenue? Yes.
Did it bring EXTRA revenue? Not quite.
Let me explain why.
Unlike Twitter or Amazon, food delivery marketplaces do not have a "network effect". [3/9]

They are all interchangeable, so what happens is:
- There's no brand loyalty.
- Customers go to whichever platform offers the biggest discounts.
- The same ppl who used to dine-in are now ordering online.
It becomes a zero sum game. [4/9]

It felt like 35% of our revenue was sucked into a blackhole... lost in some abyss.
It's upsetting to read things like, "Deliveroo just posted a loss of US$309mil for 2020 despite a 54% revenue growth..."
It's been 8 years and they still haven't figured their sh*t out?? [5/9]

"These delivery platforms become big spenders on paid ads on Google and Facebook. They call it market investment, but they are merely buying temporary market shares."

learning to code so I can do something about it.
Look, I'm well aware I'm just the little guy and there's no beating billion-dollar VC-backed companies.
But the whole spirit of indie hacking is we do what we can, with what we have. i'm here to arm the rebels

in the 3 months since @jamponydelivery's soft launch, we've enabled 5 merchants to keep 100% of hard-earned sales and that's an honest start for me.
Two have been getting orders daily!
It's a far cry from what platforms can offer, but i'm confident it will grow. [8/9]

Maybe someday I'll tweet the origin story of how @jamponydelivery began but now i need to sneep (it's nearly midnight here)
thanks for letting me rant <3
