Player Analysis - Gabriel Martinelli; a thread
Before discussing, we need to analyze Mikel’s system, which has become apparent to us. The system revolves around the CF dropping deep, making the LW the biggest goal threat in the side. Below is an analysis of why he’s perfect for the role as he’s simply not the CF Mikel wants
Movement. Nelli’s runs in behind the half-spaces while playing on the left are second to none. He pulls the opposition’s RB with him, leaving some space on the right, then proceeds to make runs in the half-space and gap created between the RB and CB. Basic signs of elite movement
Ambipedal. His ability to use both feet allows to him to be unpredictable with his final decisions. Whether it’s cutting-in with his right or drifting wide and forging a play with his left; it’s protean and something we’ve been lacking with Aubameyang and Pépé on the wings
Crossing. We’ve seen Martinelli go past RBs with ease and whip in firm / pinpoint crosses. He’s been so direct with his crossing and hits them with crazy accuracy / precision; a favorable skillset for a forward to possess, playing out wide. Think it’s his most underrated forte
Poacher: His movement compelled by starting runs out wide and drifting inwards / into the box makes it tough for the opponents to defend and allows him more space to work with. We’ve all seen him start wide and end up in near-post areas, promoted by his inbred poacher instincts
Defending and pressing; He’s known for his insane pressing + ability to close and cover the angles superbly when deployed out wide. It’s nice to have a good pressing outlet on the wings as it results in successful gain of possession, while maintaining structural compactness
