THREAD: Bad VAR Decisions Involving #MUFC, Proof That the Refs Don’t Love Us
In this thread, I will address controversial or seemingly incorrect decisions both for and against United, with videos and screenshots for evidence.
In the first game of the season, we saw Crystal Palace given a penalty for handball. Ayew scooped the ball up into Lindelof's arm, which he could not have moved out of the way in time, but VAR deemed the referee's decision not to award the penalty to be a clear and obvious error.
Further, although the resulting penalty was saved by De Gea, it was retaken as VAR judged neither of his feet to have been on the goal-line. This decision isn’t technically incorrect, but scrutinising whether a goalkeeper is off his line by a centimetre seems a little much.
In our next PL game, we conceded a last-minute equaliser against Brighton, only to go up the other end and win a penalty after the final whistle. Although its timing was unconventional, nobody can argue that this decision was incorrect-Maupay led with his arm.
It was three games and three contentious decisions for United, as Anthony Martial was sent off early in our home fixture with Spurs. If Martial's is a red, so is Lamela's, the only difference being that the Spurs player fell to the floor when his face was lightly tapped.
Then, in a defensively solid 0-0 draw with Chelsea, Harry Maguire probably should have had a penalty given against him. He wrestled Azpilaqueta to the ground when a free-kick was lifted into the box, but luckily got away with it.
The game that ended our poor start to the season, beating Everton 3-1, involved yet another controversial decision. Jordan Pickford escaped punishment for recklessness again, as he kicked out at Harry Maguire. No penalty or card was given.
In our scrappy victory over West Brom, the Baggies were awarded a penalty at the start of the second half, when it was still 0-0. This was overturned by VAR, however, as Bruno was deemed to have made contact with the ball. Correct decision imo, but controversial.
Fred was sent off with a second yellow card against PSG in a disappointing 3-1 defeat. Although he probably should have been shown a straight red in the first half, the challenge that resulted in his dismissal was hardly a foul, getting the ball in what seemed a fair tackle.
Then, in our Carabou Cup fixture against Everton, the officials looked favourably on a particular incident. While Cavani has generally been unlucky since he moved to England, he was very fortunate not to receive disciplinary action for this.
Our 2-1 victory over Aston Villa saw us score the winning goal with a seemingly controversial penalty. For me, Pogba was tripped, but plenty of others disagree.
Almost a year on from an embarrassing 2-0 loss to Burnley, we beat them 1-0 despite two controversial decisions. Firstly, Brady, the last defender, fouls Cavani, which should be a red card, but Shaw's supposed foul in the build-up saved him. Except Shaw got the ball...
In the same game, Maguire had a headed goal ruled out for a foul he had committed in reaching the ball. Personally, I don't see how this could possibly be a foul, and calling it so as the ref did seems a clear and obvious error.
Now for the Sheffield United game. Two huge and officially declared as incorrect decisions that changed the course of our season. Firstly, De Gea was pushed in the back from a corner, taking him away from the ball and allowing the Blades to open the scoring.
Then we had a goal ruled out after Maguire made slight contact with Ramsdale in contesting the ball. Anywhere else on the pitch that is not a foul, especially considering the earlier decision. The ref incorrectly blew his whistle before the ball went in so it couldn't be checked.
In the reverse fixture against West Brom, they grabbed an early goal, but Diagne, the scorer, seemed to cover Lindelof's face in order to beat him to the ball.
Another 0-0 stalemate against Chelsea brought with it another discussion surrounding VAR, as Hudson-Odoi somehow escaped conceding a penalty when he clearly handled the ball with his arm in an unnatural position.
Arguably the worst on this list, our recent game against Spurs saw a Cavani goal chalked off as McTominay had allegedly fouled Son in the buildup. Son made a huge meal of a tiny brush on the face, and after rolling around on the floor, got up and put spurs into the lead. [END]
