UBC's Finance Committee approved the budget, which includes significant investments in the Indigenous Strategic Plan, all prepared and presented without Indigenous voice or presence at the decision-making table. This should be the last UBC budget that does its business this way. https://twitter.com/UbysseyNews/status/1382461611261059077
Future budgets should be reviewed by the new ISP committees, which place Indigenous people at the decision-making table.
The new ISP Executive Advisory and Coordinating Committees place Indigenous people at high, decision-making levels and should be consulted from here, forward, on major UBC decisions, like budget, to affirm that they appropriately advance ISP goals and action items.
These committees are just now launching so will be prepared to play a role in next year's budget process.
Another suggestion: UBC Board of Governors can involve the Indigenous Engagement Cmte in the budget process. Cmte mandate is to align UBC operations with the UNDRIP & TRC. Should have the opportunity to assess ISP investments against community need, and review results and impact.

The Board of Governors will meet on Monday, April 19 to vote on the budget. Here are questions I recommend be asked. 1) What were the Indigenous consultations conducted on the Indigenous engagement elements of the budget? 2) Were both campuses engaged in ISP & TRC related items?
3) How are ISP institutional commitments reflected in the way this budget was produced and consulted upon? The focus of this question should be on process and not only content.
4) How does the ISP/TRC budget request meet the stated needs of Indigenous communities, what is the anticipated impact of the items proposed?
5) What are the views of the Board's Indigenous Engagement Committee on this budget request? How will the Indigenous Engagement Committee be involved in assessment of impact and results coming from this budget request?
6) Do the various offices involved in creating this budget commit fully to changing course away from this deeply colonial framework and relying on the new ISP supportive infrastructure going forward? Adhering to the principle of "nothing about us, without us?"
