IMO, this piece mixes some sharp, original, and useful analysis with some that is more dubious. The excerpts in this thread belong in the first category, and mostly speak for themselves.

Lincoln firmly believed loyalty should be rewarded. In practice, this prevented him from taking absolutist positions when it came to groups defined by anything other than loyalty. Service to the Union was more salient to him than almost anything else.
