Ever wondered how we've managed to support our members during lockdown? We have a 2 year partnership with @Tescomobile, who donated £700,000 worth of data & devices to help us stay connected. Here's a thread from Zoe, one of the tutors at our Edinburgh Skylight, to explain...
Since the first lockdown started we’ve been getting our members online instead of meeting face-to-face. Before we place orders we find out what technology they need, the skill levels they have and the barriers they face...
Our Administrator lives near to me so I walk over to her and we meet in the park to hand over the new tablets.
The @Tescomobiles arrive so now it’s time to set everything up! We support members to get online quickly by putting all their apps, shortcuts and accounts onto their devices.
The finished devices give the members access to Zoom, Headspace, Indeed, Google Lens and Lothian Buses, as well as Gmail, Google Translate, Chrome, learning and social media apps.
Our members live in hostels, flats, hotels and B&Bs scattered across Edinburgh. I prefer to drop devices off in-person as it allows me to log the member into their wifi, which can be hard for those with poor IT or literacy skills.
The @tescomobile phones come with monthly data so are ideal for members who are likely to move around frequently or in temporary accommodation with no wifi or poor signal.
We photograph the devices before they go out so we can provide members with a personalised guide to help them start out. Using the guide as well as phone conversations we’re able to coach members online allowing them to take part in classes, meetings and events.
(PS) - In the end Zoe racked up an incredible 183,523 steps over the course of March as part of our #CrisisStepForward challenge! Great work Zoe!!
