Though Jo wasn’t written as non-binary, we as artists always want to respect and embrace the resonance a character or story has for any audience member. Through our work with experts, we learned how much language matters when it comes to gender identity, (2/5)
and made sure we were honoring the intent of the character with that clarity. This, along with several other changes in the script and production, were addressed between Boston & NYC. (3/5)
We recognize that clarification caused pain to the trans and non-binary community, and apologize for any harm, as it was certainly never our intent. Our show was designed as a vehicle for activism, empathy, and inclusion. (4/5)
We will strive to continue to learn, to live up to the ideals that our story embodies, and build toward a better Broadway for all. (5/5)
