There's been lots of talk in regards to twitter trending algorithm. I just wanted to explain that as a technical person. Please consider retweeting if you read this. Also, the point for the trend is not to invalidate anyone's feelings, this is just for information
I saw lots of tweets yesterday to not trend things. And for twitter to fix it's algorithm. This is how algorithm works:
1. Let's consider this scenario where atleast a 5000 people are tweeting "Apple" at the same time, there are lots of interaction with those tweets
then it will trend on a higher number than for example atleast 5000 people tweeting "Mango" over a period of one hour. This depends on machine learning(for data), which picks up on the spike. This happens to us when we watch streams, or there's something exciting happening
Because if a 1% of people also tweet about that streams then that is also a huge number for our community.
2. Another thing to consider is personalization, so sometimes we see trends for cc's that does not mean they are on the trending page. It means that it will be trending on
in a particular country but at a very higher(eg.30th) number.
3. Again no algorithm is perfect, engineers are constantly trained to think how to better the algorithm. The point of creating this thread this twitter does not suppress the trends. It just means that not enough
people are talking about it. That's what happens for important issues. If something happens in US, not everyone in the community will be aware about it. When the information is spread, people retweet it or tweet about it, which will be gradual increase, so it takes
time to trend.
4. I have seen most amazing people in the community who always try to help others and sympathize with others. I created this thread because I saw someone's tweet on how censoring names was causing them problems as it does not pick up properly in screen reader.
5. So next time when you "fix your algorithm" or "don't trend things" please consider this. I just get mad when people say "fix your algorithm", it takes fuck ton of time to make the changes and come up with algorithm. #mcyttwt #dttwt
