Yesterday I posted about Pokémon Sleep and the responses sent me down a big rabbit hole I didn't expect. I'd like to remind you of the 2019 Pokémon Press Conference and how virtually nothing announced that day actually happened. I forgot it too. (Thread)
First announcement of the day is Detective Pikachu getting a continuation on the Switch that resolves its cliffhanger ending. This could be a port with a new chapter, or it could be a sequel. We don't know because two years later, it's never been acknowledged again.
Second was Pokémon Quest getting enhancements & new content, plus coming to China. This never came out, but was apparently completed. The publisher made a public campaign begging Chinese authorities to allow publishing, implying that's the reason. It never released anywhere.
Next up is Pokémon Home announced without specifying the many, many limitations it would have. I felt like this image made it look like a clear upgrade to Pokémon Bank, when personally, I kept my Bank subscription and never bought Home. It did come out, but y'know...
Side note, that connection to Go they announced here took an extra year to come out after Home. When it finally did come out, it sucked, but I'm not here to debate about it. I'm just presenting this information on a press conference.
Now for the big one, Pokémon Sleep! It was announced in May 2019 with a 2020 release date and was never mentioned again. I did some digging and the Wikipedia page cites the pandemic caused a delay, but the source it links says nothing about it. It's just a news article from 2019.
It's been radio silence with no details given. I looked into the studio developing it and they've had zero social media activity since 2015. (I think) their last game was in 2016. It's hard to find anything about them now, and I'm not convinced they still exist.
Pokémon Sleep was to connect to Pokémon Go, rewarding you in that game for good sleeping habits. To do this, they announced a device called Pokémon Go Plus Plus. This device, along with these planned features for Go were also never acknowledged again after this announcement.
And we finally arrive at the only news that materialized: Pokémon Masters & Pokémon Shirts. In total, 7 announcements. If we isolate to just games, we got 2 out of 6 with one being the mess that was Home. The more digging I did, the more questions I had! What a weird conference.
