Okay, I have eaten some things and there's a Chopped marathon, so who's ready for a #LainaWatchesAnne thread? I blew my deadline so we took a little break but we're back!
#LainaWatchesAnne Today we are looking at Anne with an E!

And can I just say, this title being different makes this thread a lot easier? There's so many Anne of Green Gables movies/shows now XD
#LainaWatchesAnne This is probably the series most of you have heard of/know the best by sheer virtue of being a Netflix/CBC co-production. As of 2019, this is o longer a thing the CBC will be doing, which I think is a real shame.
#LainaWatchesAnne Seems to me the most popular CBC shows are the ones on Netflix - Schitt's Creek, Kim's Convenience, this.

Like does anyone milennialish or younger actually watch CBC anymore? Apparently 65% of online Canadians haven't even heard of CBC Gem.
#LainaWatchesAnne Like I got into the Frankie Drake Mysteries but only because it was on Amazon Prime and I had Prime for a month. I feel like the CBC is losing their audience but that's just my inexpert opinion.
#LainaWatchesAnne Anne With An E was created by Moira Walley-Beckett, who apparently directed some good Breaking Bad episodes. Confession - I've never actually seen that show.
#LainaWatchesAnne Executive producer Miranda de Pencier said they really wanted "a documentary level of realism" in the sets and costumes. Frankly, I just appreciate they know it's the 1890s and not 1907.
#LainaWatchesAnne Interestingly, this was released March 2017, right as the second and third movies of the 2016 series were coming out.
#LainaWatchesAnne Here's a comparison I think is really telling - Amybeth McNulty, Anne With An E's Anne, is four months younger than Ella Balentine (2016 Anne).

In March 2016, Amybeth had filmed the first season of the show, and Ella had finished the third movie, Fire and Dew.
#LainaWatchesAnne They were both 15 in 2017.

Isn't that kind of wild? At the same age, they were playing the same character 5 years apart in her life.
#LainaWatchesAnne I like some of Walley-Beckett's quotes about Anne. "Oh, she has got some anti-hero stuff, which is fun. She's not classically beautiful, and she has a bad temper, and she can be heedless."

You know how much I love Anne's temper.
#LainaWatchesAnne She also say, "There are other versions of "Anne" out there for 5-year-olds." And I cackled. So you weren't a big fan of the 2016 movie, either, eh?
#LainaWatchesAnne I'm fascinated by this article that mentions them building a creek behind the school set for the kids to keep their milk bottles in because that's a tiny detail in the book.
#LainaWatchesAnne Okay, so.

I watched the first two episods and the first episode is double-length so it's actually like three episodes and that's all I'll be looking at for now. I did this with the anime and webseries and it went well, I think.
#LainaWatchesAnne Also I've been doing this for TWO YEARS and I want to read the second book, dang it. I don't have it in me to recap 3 seasons of a show right now, I just don'.
#LainaWatchesAnne I didn't get the episode titles at first but they're all quotes from literature. Season One is from Jane Eyre. Makes more sense when you get that.

So let's take a look at "Your Will Shall Decide Your Destiny".
#LainaWatchesAnne It starts with a horse so Luce was happy, but ngl the first person we see being Mathew did make me nervous after 6 hours of Martin Sheen's Matthew of Green Gables.
#LainaWatchesAnne Then the opening theme is... odd. I don't dislike the acual art of the theme or anything, but the music is a weird choice. Why the Tragically Hip?

Obviously they're Canadian but the distance between Anne of Green Gables and the Tragically Hip seems pretty big
#LainaWatchesAnne After that, we see Marilla setting the table and telling Matthew he needs to hurry to meet the train.

She talks a bit about the boy they want to adopt and their dynamic is good. She's doing all the talking and he basically none. And they look good.
#LainaWatchesAnne Marilla also makes a funny comment about Mrs Rachel and her "hunger for gossip".

Speaking of, Mrs Rachel also looks pretty good
#LainaWatchesAnne Look, an establishing shot that's not super obvious stock footage!
#LainaWatchesAnne I also quite this intro shot of Anne. I think she'd like it - it's rather romantic.
#LainaWatchesAnne Then she hears a crying baby and has a PTSD flashback to Mrs Hammond slapping her and yelling at her

Uh, Netflix, you seem to have gotten some 2016 movie on you. What is it with trains and PTSD flashbacks lately?
#LainaWatchesAnne At least it's not in bad black and white?

But yeah. That's a thing again. I'm not really a fan but objectively it is better made on a purely technical level, at least.
#LainaWatchesAnne Anne tries to ask Mrs Spencer questions about Green Gables and Mrs Spencer is just like "Yeah... no".

Cool shot of Anne at Bright River and a nice Bright River set in general
#LainaWatchesAnne Cherry tree is a little underwhelming though XD
#LainaWatchesAnne These two well-dressed ladies say hello to Matthew and he says abolutely nothing in return and also looks a little petrified
#LainaWatchesAnne He also seems a little awkward talking to the stationmaster, even. A SHY Matthew Cuthbert? What will they think of next???
#LainaWatchesAnne Anne introduces herself to him and shakes his hand for almost 20 straight seconds, which honestly is really funny. She just keeps going and going.

Small thig, but I like the dirt under Matthew's nails? It looks like he actually works with his hands.
#LainaWatchesAnne Anne is great in this scene - she has an interesting energy, excited and nervous at the same time. And Matthew is clearly out of his depths.

Anne says she's happy she's going to be a daughter, not a servant, and Matthew's face is all, "Oh God what have I done?"
#LainaWatchesAnne She also makes friends with the horse and names her Belle and Luce liked this scene XD It's very cute and in character.

Honestly Anne as a Horse Girl makes a frightening amount of sense.
#LainaWatchesAnne The carriage ride to Green Gables is pretty much book accurate, and the scenery is pretty. It's a bit washed out, but I think it's supposed to be both very early spring and a stylistic choice to further the narrative.
#LainaWatchesAnne When I wrote the notes for this thread, I said "early spring where I live now is just brown" but now it looks like this outside, so, you know. Springtime in Canada.
