ITALIAN TRADITIONAL CLOTHING
1/?

1/?
I've already covered Italian traditional jewels, but traditional clothing in my country is just as stunning! And extremely varied. I'll cover some of the most iconic traditional garments from the peninsula. 2/?
Traditional clothing of Scanno, Abruzzo. The most distinctive piece of this dress is the headpiece, called rezzola, which aim was to protect the woman's hair from wind while out tending the flock. 3/?
The clothing changed in the XIX and XX century, to become more 'respectable'. The bright colours dulled to black, and the rezzola became a sort of hat only used during festivities. 4/?
Old nonnas still wear the iconic headpiece to this day! Albeit in a demure fashion - it's traditional in Italy for widows to always wear black. It's a custom that still survives in remote areas of my country, but only done by veeeeery old people lmao. 5/?
Moving to Calabria, the area of Tiriolo has a stunning traditional garment called 'la pacchiana'. The stunning embroidery is the distinctive mark - and as person who drools over recursive pattern, I'm just enamored. 6/?
Once again old nonnas wear it best. Look at this stunning picture of a Calabrese old woman proudly sporting her pacchiana! 7/?
The pacchiana is also common in Apulia, despite in a different version. The Apulian pacchiana is a white robe, enriched by a fuckton of golden jewels. Ironically, 'pacchiano' in Italian means kitsch... and you can see why! (honestly tho I love the Apulian version) 8/?
It may seem luxurious, but the pacchiana was actually worn by peasants! It was the 'abito da festa', the one flashy garment to be worn on special occasion 9/?
Another traditional garment from Apulia is this extremely colorful one, still worn to this day in occasion of the San Dorotea festivity in Castro! 10/?
The area called Ciociaria (south east of Rome) has a very peculiar traditional garment - a colorful striped apron, a white headpiece and the iconic 'ciocie', a type of shoes typical of the area used since the dawn of time. 11/?
For some reason, these colorful clothes were very loved by painters. It's FULL of paintings by European artists portraying women from Ciociaria, wearing the traditional garment! These two are my favs 12/?
As usual, people from Sardinia bring it to the next level. Basically each town there has its own traditional garments. In the pictures, the traditional garment of Nuoro and Oristano 13/?
They are quite different aren't they? But one thing in common is the jewellry: I made a specific thread about Sardinian jewellry, check it out: https://twitter.com/jackdaw_writes/status/1378380933980639234?s=20
Soooo these were some of the most iconic traditional clothes from Italy. As for everything in my country, they testify to our rich history and the influence of many different cultures we came in contact with, in true Mediterranean fashion. 15/?
