On March 16th, 8 persons belonging to the #AAPI community were targeted and murdered because of their identity. Their senseless murders were the latest act of violence among over 3800 reported incidents targeting this community. 2/n
This week, we all saw footage of #CaironNazario - an Afro-Latina soldier - subjected to police violence. Shortly thereafter, we saw footage of #DaunteWright being murdered by police, within miles of where #GeorgeFloyd was also murdered by police. 3/n
Now, dust of those commitments and tell me what your actually doing. Are you expanding course offerings that de-center Whiteness and address how to dismantle White Supremacy? Does such a course even exist in your department? Why not? 4/n
Are you prioritizing candidates that adopt a clear anti-racism framework in hiring? Or is “DEI” still an afterthought? Are you including discussions of systemic racism, oppression, & power across MULTIPLE course offerings? Or is that just the responsibility of POC faculty? 5/n
Watching people of color being murdered, attacked, & harmed is exhausting enough without performative commitments to Anti-Racism from the very institutions that claim to value us. 6/n
If you value your Black & AAPI faculty, staff, and students like you say, DO BETTER BECAUSE WE DESERVE BETTER. 6/fin
