The controversies and arguments over the new Jewish Currents issue (both the responsa on anti-antisemitism and the INN article) are a sign of a healthy Jewish left, and indeed how the Jewish left is a healthy Jewish community.
Is there total agreement? No. There is respectful and vigorous debate over heartfelt disagreements. Nobody is trying to toss anybody else out of any club. I’ve seen no threats to cancel subscriptions or people.
After years of dissidents being expelled from mainstream Jewish institutions--and of course a history of sectarian splits in the Jewish left--it's very refreshing to see this. It is a model for the rest of the Jewish community to follow.
And a leftist magazine challenging other leftists, stirring up controversy, but doing so in a decent and respectful way--that's a model for other leftwing publications too.
