this is a reasonable point I hear a lot and one I sympathize with (and I do not have a substack, so keep that in mind). But a lot of us can't get staff work, have been trying for years, have things we'd like to write, and would like to get paid for it, and have folks who want to. https://twitter.com/davidmackau/status/1381744630207811585
I'm not interested in trying to turn a paid newsletter into generational wealth. But I would like to make a middle class salary as a writer. And the only model that seems to be expanding is direct funding from a small group of readers.
Anyway. I like outlets with collections of good writers more than single-voiced newsletters in general. But it's also true that a lot of outlets have people who piss me off and it's hard for me to spend my limited financial resources on them. It's a quandary!
