Hi folks! 🥰

The Nat. Res. Committee is officially in session! #SB467 will be heard today and we will try to tweet out when it is happening! #YesonSB467

Since we can’t be together in person, feel free to join us for a zoom party to watch the hearing at http://bit.ly/SB467NRC
There are MANY oil and gas bills up today and people can’t even get into the phone lines for the Committee hearing right now to provide “me toos” aka support/opposition for bills.

We are on the bill right before #SB467, should be up within the next half hour! We will try to keep people updated!
We now have @Scott_Wiener up! He says this bill focuses on some of the most destructive forms of oil extraction that has negative environmental and public health impacts. “ #SB467 also requires a buffer zone of 2500 ft”
He says the bill will also incentivize oil well remediation work and target oil and gas workers losing their jobs because of the dying industry. #unionstrong
He says that CA views itself as global leader, especially on climate action and there is a large stain on the CA climate record, and that stain is oil. He discusses Kern County producing roughly 70% of CA’s oil.
He discusses the prenatal complications, and other health risks, including respiratory illnesses. He talks about the people who live near oil and gas wells and children who go to school near schools, a majority of which are low-income, Black, Indigenous, and Latinx communities.
He makes very clear that this is a racial justice issue. That we need to correct the history of environmental racism in CA. He says that he knows it is a big bill, that we have had flexibility on the bill that it will be a place for us to have a conversation around this.
He discusses the natural decline of the oil and gas industry just like the coal industry. He discusses the very key point of “if not now, when?”
We now have @JuanFloresEJ with @CRPE_EJ as a key witness for #SB467. He talks about the failure of @CountyofKern to protect our communities. He talks about his own daughter who was born premature.
He says “Dear Committee members, I am not asking for you to pay for my children’s future. I am asking you to support #SB467, to ban the most dangerous drilling practices, including neighborhood drilling. It’s the best my wife and I can do...
...Allow my children and the millions of children in low income communities the opportunity to live their drama in a healthy environment.”

Now we move on to me toos, people who support and oppose the bill!
It’s no secret that trying to get into this call was difficult. Many of our supporters were not even allowed to voice their support of this bill.

We sit in a zoom right now with many not being able to get in, many that were not assigned line numbers.
Okay! The “me toos” are over and now is back to committee for comments and questions!
