1. The treatment for this type of clot is the OPPOSITE as for more common clots. If they give you heparin, it could make you worse off. So it's important to get the word out to doctors/providers to watch out for CVST + thrombocytopenia in a certain window after getting the J&J
2. One person has died and one is in critical condition. Note that 6 cases in 6.8 million doses is not quite the right math, since the cases appeared 6-13 days after the shot and doses were being given up until yesterday. There will probably be more cases & more deaths found.
It's still VERY rare and if I recently got the J&J I would not be particularly worried. But FDA and CDC want to get the word out about symptoms. They are:
- severe headache
- leg pain and/or abdominal pain
- shortness of breath
- timeframe: 1-2 weeks after the shot (maybe more?)
Fortunately this timeframe doesn't overlap with the headache you might get along with fatigue, fever, etc in the days after the vaccine.

They also said in the press call if you got your shot more than a month ago you're almost certainly in the clear.
The pause is only expected to last a few days (to gather info & to get the word out) but that could change based on what ACIP decides tomorrow. You can watch the meeting, 1:30-4:30pm EDT on Weds the 14th, here: https://www.ustream.tv/channel/VWBXKBR8af4
One more thing: this complication is probably the same as with the AstraZeneca vaccine.

It has NOT been found in people who got other vaccines. Of the 121M people vaccinated in the US, 114M were with Pfizer or Moderna, which have are NOT linked to this condition.
Please note that COVID itself has a LARGE risk of blood clots. If you want to avoid clots, get vaccinated. https://twitter.com/meganranney/status/1381948405304397836?s=20
