I was in a meeting with a bunch of Black grad students and when discussing toxic advisors, the professor leading the meeting suggested students should just "put our heads down" and bear it until we get that degree.

I was like, Huh? This is terrible advice. 1/
I vehemently disagree with the idea that students, especially marginalized students, need to subject themselves to the abuses of academia to get a degree. 2/
My advice is always: Is getting a PhD worth dying for? Academia kills and almost kills people. Nothing is worth this. 3/ https://twitter.com/vj_chidambaram/status/1270008538828623874?s=20
If working on your PhD is making your like consistently miserable, don't just suffer in silence, like so many students do. Seek help, change advisors, etc. 4/
Asking for help and accepting help is easier said than done. But we can't all just keep suffering in silence and putting our heads down, beating ourself up to obtain a degree. 5/
And if your advisor doesn't treat you like a human being, like you're a research robot, do whatever you can to get away from this person.

Ppl usually don't like when I say this but worse case, just drop out. It sucks, but again, nothing is worth 4+ years of abuse. 6/
