I am truly horrified at how easily some can move from touting anti-carceral principles to proliferating right-wing articles w/ highly visible activists’ addresses in them—endangering them, their children, and their entire families. Yes, I’m talking about Patrisse Cullors. (1/14)
Over the last few days, I watched with horror as a right-wing news article riddled with lies began its ascent from 4Chan to Reddit, to Twitter, to Fox News, to the pages of the New York Post. (2/14)
From there, I watched as right-wing accounts leveraged legitimate critiques of BLM to convince folks outside of the racist right to share lies about Patrisse. (3/14)
Let’s be clear on what’s happening here. Regardless of the fact that Patrisse is widely known not only for her activism, but as a bestselling Author, a documentarian who has premiered at Sundance, a performance artist, a professor, a writer, and a professional speaker— (4/14)
it is easier for some of y’all to believe that this woman has engaged in corruption through BLM than to believe that she has her own bag? (5/14)
Seriously?? I honestly have a hard time believing that some of you who I know who have made these critiques have the same level of scrutiny for lighter, thinner, straighter, male visible figures among us. (6/14)
And honestly…can we think about this shit for five seconds longer than the right-wing media wants you to? What kind of expectations are heaped on to Black women whether they have wealth or not? Who are they expected to take care of? (7/14)
Why would she have three homes in the same city? She made a whole documentary about a disabled family member and the torture he experienced over the years…like…what are y’all doing??? Who are y’all harming??? (8/14)
What would make this right? Should she….stop working on all of her passions and solely do activist work? What level of suffering should she ensure that she and her family remain victimized by to be virtuous enough? (9/14)
I know her directly so let me be all the way real—Patrisse and her family have received direct death threats to their homes as a result of this. Patrisse, her child, and other members of her family have had to flee their homes. (10/14)
Is it that easy? Is that all it takes to become accomplices to a white supremacist right intent on harming people? Honestly, I don’t care how many critiques I have of Patrisse or anyone else—I don’t want her to die. (11/14)
Let’s be clear—this is bigger than BLM. The folks who are paying to drum up these conspiracies know as well as I do that what happens here will impact others’ decision to commit their lives to liberation work; as well it should. (12/14)
If we cannot stand by our principles to love and protect one another what is the fucking point? Patrisse will not be the last of us that they come for. And I will not let my public engagement only occur in regret after the occurrence of some irrevocable harm. (13/14)
What happens now is the blueprint for the next time this shit happens. (14/14)
