I don’t respond well in the long term to attempts to influence my behavior using worst case scenarios or shame. Also limiting information because they aren’t sure I will interpret it the way they think is best. All of these have been significant tactics during Covid-19.
The longer this unfolds, the more I’m convinced that the government and unfortunately the media messaging on Covid has been manipulative. I guess they meant well. Thinking if they didn’t frame it a certain way then people wouldn’t respond as they thought best.
Just seems to have been this approach that if they don’t scare the crap out of me then I won’t comply. I’m a grown man. I don’t want your tactics to influence my behavior. I want facts.
This is from Michael Osterholm, who serves as the director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota.

Look, I don’t want anyone to get sick or die, but comparing risk of Covid to walking into a fire is nonsense and manipulative.
Try to find how many people have been hospitalized due to Covid is a journey. I mean it seems in 2020 that 164,304 people were hospitalized. Yet the reports are 500,000 Covid deaths. I sincerely don’t understand. Did 336,000 people die at home?

I don’t think I’m alone in starting to feel like the government and media have consistently decided they need to keep the fear accelerator on full because if they don’t, old Bill might go shopping to the Piggly Wiggly without a mask on.
I mean if boarding an airplane is walking into a fire without a fireproof suit, then grocery shopping is at least similar to storming the beach at Normandy, right?
Data I desire:

The percentage of people hospitalized due to Covid is _____.

The % of people I will encounter daily who are Covid positive is _____. (Seems 7% in Virginia)

The % of people who die from Covid is _____.

The % with long term health issues from Covid is ____.
