[exposing james veitch]

or, summarising the accounts of the courageous women who exposed the comedian james veitch.

a thread for anyone who's out of the loop and still supporting this alleged monster.

please retweet!

CONTENT WARNING: rape, sexual coercion, emotional abuse
you may know veitch from his sets on conan o'brien's tbs show, or from his viral TED talks about scambaiting, or from his youtube videos with mashable.

he's the rubber ducks guy. the towel rail guy. the gold guy, the toaster guy. he basically owns youtube's recommended function.
james veitch's comic persona is a geeky, glasses-wearing young english white guy; awkward, boyish, obsessive, nerdy, a bit needy.

i feel like i'm describing myself here. that's the issue with his relatable persona; it's designed to disarm, thriving on its illusion of innocence.
james veitch is 41 (he looks far younger). he studied english at the uni of aberdeen. after working in film editing, he attended sarah lawrence college - a liberal arts school in yonkers, NY - as a graduate in his late 20s.

it is here that the alleged incidents occurred.
in september 2020, meghan klien - an LA postproduction supervisor and sarah lawrence alum - heard about veitch's HBO special and tweeted impulsively:

"it was common knowledge to say away from him when i was an undergrad...it makes my skin crawl...he violated my classmates."
klien deleted the tweet - she'd only heard unverified stories after all - but she decided to do some digging.

she texted ex-classmate jael simonson-tunick, who in turn contacted an array of college friends as part of a fact-finding mission.

more than a dozen women came forward.
just to be clear: these aren't isolated incidents. they aren't trifles either.

there are stories of brutal rape.
there are stories of getting women drunk, of coercing them into kisses, of wheedling them into his bedroom, of slamming them down with force.

it is shockingly lurid.
too lurid, in fact, to be disclosed here. open the article if you dare.

veitch's predatory attitude towards women also seemingly covers his relationships with them.

one ex feels he was attracted to her "vulnerability" and her desire for validation - "the blood in the water".
now, i want to stress that 'cancel culture' isn't perfect.

i believe in innocent until proven guilty.

however, what we have here is a COLOSSAL weight of VERY serious allegations against veitch - allegations he has barely deigned to acknowledge.

i think that speaks for itself.
veitch has reuploaded his past collabs onto his OWN youtube channel.

he still flogs his merch store, making money off of ignorant fans.

he auto-deletes youtube comments that contain words like 'allegations'.

his sole acknowledgement was an instagram comment: "i got cancelled".
veitch's instagram feed is tailored to perpetuate his persona; the innocent boy next-door, playing acoustic guitar while his dog nuzzles him.

it's highly manipulative, and it nearly works. but he can't hide this forever, and now he's been dropped by hbo, conan, AND the bbc.
james veitch was one of my favourite comedians, maybe my favourite.

i bought a t-shirt from his merch store.

i was on his mailing list.

and if you're in the same boat, don't beat yourself up about not knowing 'til now. i made this thread precisely for people out of the loop.
because i still see people talking about him, about this monster, in kind terms.

and, well, these aren't redeemable allegations. no context can ever render these permissible, or understandable, or fucking comprehensible.

they're gruesome.
i'm reminded of the words of daniel sloss in his incendiary show about rape and rape culture, 'x':

"there are monsters among us, and they look like us."

(a source close to veitch says he denies all allegations.)
by the way, do you think i was happy to make this thread??? no, of course i fucking wasn't. i feel let down and i'm full of rage. i only found out about this days ago and it's put a pall over the last couple of days.

thanks for reading and sharing, folks.
