I often talk about women and how they& #39;re not allowed to have ambition or the courage to pursue their dreams in Indian families.

Well, I& #39;d like to tell you that the situation for young Indian guys just out of college is at the opposite end of the spectrum but still just as bad.
1/ Recently, a friend of mine got rebuked by his mother for deciding not to apply for CAT. Her reason:

"Log bol rahe hai kuch kar nahi raha hai."
2/ He& #39;s working as a Growth Executive. He might not be able to contribute a lot to the family. But he& #39;s doing what he loves. And he& #39;s just 21!

What is this pressure at such a young age?!!!
3/ His sister on the other hand isn& #39;t working, even though she was a pretty good student. Simply because she isn& #39;t expected to.
4/ The pressure young men in our country are put through to take the conventional, well-trodden path and start earning big bucks asap is also something that needs to be talked about.
5/ This premature stifling of interests due to preset expectations of what a man should do only leads to pent-up resentment and angst down the line. It then shows up in other areas of life.
6/ I remember I told my parents once that I wanted to pursue psychology for post-graduation. They were quite supportive of it.

I wonder what their reaction would& #39;ve been like if I were a guy?
