a guide to fasting through ramadan for edtwt - please rt!
this thread will cover the following:

mindset
physical health
religiosity + spirituality
things you can do during ramadan!

please ask me any questions if you have any!
mindset:

during ramadan, the main reason we fast is to sympathise with those who are less fortunate than us and develop gratitude for the things we have. fasting is also a way for us to eliminate distractions such as food, smoking and other activities so we can focus on +
our religion and develop a stronger relationship with Allah SWT.

it's hard to have the correct intention when fasting for ramadan when our minds are so disordered, so i recommend trying to surround yourself with religious activity so that our intentions remain pure:
pray!

i don't usually pray all five of my prayers but i do my absolute best to fulfil them all during ramadan. i also make dua and complete tasbeeh for about 5-10 minutes after every prayer
read the quran!

this is a good way to distract myself from the hunger i feel after long hours, and i do my best to finish the quran at least once each ramadan. i split the quran up into each juz and try to complete one per day
physical health:

it's tempting to skip suhoor to make our intake lower but please eat it! this will provide energy for you to get through the day!

i tend to eat slow-energy-release foods such as oatmeal or sweet potatoes and high protein foods such as eggs for suhoor
it's also important to stay hydrated! i drink about 8 glass of water a day which i split into 4 for suhoor and 4 for iftar.
in terms of iftar, my family serve a lot of high calorie ethnic foods! in order not too eat too high over my intake, i drink two glasses of water and have a date to break my fast. i then pray maghrib and return to eat iftar! this curbs my appetite and i eat less than i planned to
please don't forget to take any medication and vitamins! i take 5 or 6 types each day which i have just before i go to bed

it's important to eat vitamins (i'd recommend B vitamins, vit D and C and iron) to ensure your body is healthy and produces enough energy for you!
religiosity + spirituality

ramadan is all about getting closer to your deen, so try to do that! since you get more blessings in this month than any other month of the year, i choose this time to donate to charity!
i use my10nights to donate in the last 10 days of ramadan - this allows me to catch laylatul qadr (the night of power) as well which also increases my blessings!

there are many charities which also do daily automated donations throughout ramadan, please check them out!
i also stay up every odd night in the last night for laylatul qadr! i usually spend this time amking dua or reading the quran. sometimes i make myself a coffee or tea to stay awake through the entire night and i sleep extra in the day to make up for it!
things you can do during ramadan to get more blessings!

i've already mentioned donating to charity and reading the quran - these blessings get multiplies by 70 each time!
i would also suggest changing your phone/laptop wallpaper to an islamic one - this reminds me i'm supposed to be focusing on religion!
i also spend some time researching hadiths and sunnahs of the prophet (SAW) which i then try to incorporate into my life! i aim to include three new habits into my life every year and learn at least 10 hadiths
you can also spend time memorising duas and surahs of the quran! this year i've set myself a goal to learn 5 new duas and three surahs - each time i recite it to memorise it, i receive more ajr for it!
seclude yourself from negative influences - it's easy to get hotheaded and angry at times or feel upset, but whenever this happens i withdraw myself from that person/influence and recite tasbeeh in my head to try and calm down. reciting the quran also helps!
mute words/closing autoplay on twitter

this is pretty self explanatory - in order to avoid seeing nsfr content on the timeline i mute a lot of words and pause autoplay so i don't hear any music either!
ramadan playlist!

i try not to listen to music during ramadan so i make a separate playlist which i can listen to when travelling/working out! it usually includes nasheeds, quran recitations and podcasts!
if you are exempt from fasting, please use that time to rest and take a break from fasting! it's tempting to fast even when you're not meant to but the exemptions are in place to keep you safe! i usually use these days as metabolism boost days
summary:

ramadan is a blessed month of spirituality and good deeds. try not to let disordered habits and ideals interfere with it, and please take care of yourself as you fast!
NOTE: if you are non muslim and wish to fast, you are welcome to join us! as long as you are respectful and understanding of why we fast and don't see it as a fad diet or trend, we will welcome you with open arms :)
