I keep trying to think what sort of thing would replace Police and I keep imagining a van that can transport people safely to: mental health center, detox, hospital, housing. Then I realize we would need mental health and detox centers for people to go to.
Then I think if we spent less money putting people in jail for metal health and/or alcohol an drug issues then we would have money to spend on things that... well actually work.
Don't get me wrong I know that there are generally bad people out there. I have been the victim of them. But the ones that really fucked me over were rich white guys who never seen to have gone to prison anyway.
And I happen to know a great deal about the person who did the most damage to me and found out that they were sexually assaulted at a young age and then told to "get over it" (at 6-7). So even in him I think he could have been helped.
What I do not see is any concept of retribution in this ideal world. The idea of "making someone pay for their crimes" leads nowhere. Some people have to be removed from society because they are a danger, and victims need to be able to heal.
