Please be aware that out of 6.8M+ doses of the J&J vaccine that have been administered in the U.S., 6 cases of a rare & severe type of blood clot in individuals after receiving the vaccine have been reported. Right now, these adverse events appear to be extremely rare. https://twitter.com/us_fda/status/1381925612743499778
With this said, in the U.S., we have mRNA (Moderna & Pfizer) vaccines available so please do not let this deter you from getting vaccinated in the meantime. All 6 cases occurred among women between the ages of 18 and 48, and symptoms occurred 6 to 13 days after vaccination.
I want everyone to put this in perspective and try to process this rationally. 6 cases out of 6.8M+ doses administered (0.00000088). They’re looking into this out of an abundance of caution. You are MORE likely to suffer from blood clots from being infected with SARS-CoV-2.
Again, this is a PAUSE NOT A SUSPENSION so that the CDC/FDA may further investigate the issue, so please try not to panic. I know it’s difficult with headlines, mass hysteria, and antivaxx doubt but it’s important to process the context of the situation and remedy this now.
Based on the FDA/CDC conference call that was just held, it seems this pause was mostly to prepare administrators/clinicians to advise, diagnose, and treat recipients who MAY develop CVST and/or related conditions due to vaccination. They expect this pause to only be temporary!
The FDA Director specified part of the reason for the pause after only 6 cases out of 6.8M+ doses administered was to be able to prevent and advise against patients being treated with heparin based anticoagulants.
