I’m waking up this morning still bewildered at the decision the GISD school board made last night, letting masks be optional. Literally everything is political now. Common sense, fact, reason and science have all been tossed to the wayside. 1/

The GISD school board went along with Christian nationalism and Trumpism over science. It’s deeply embarrassing. 2/

The valedictorian of this year’s class came to speak at the emergency board meeting held last month. He talked about how his grandmother died of Covid. He pleaded with the school board to follow the science and make a rational decision. 3/

The board applauded him for his willingness to share his experience, his conviction, reason and stance. 4/

The board said the students who came to speak up for Covid safety in their school were important and made all the difference in their decision. But in the end, they abandoned last month’s vote and let the science deniers have their way. 5/

The school board caved to those pushing a list of Trump-inspired, conspiracy theory garbage. 6/

You know what the most disappointing part is? All the people who didn’t show up to say a word at last month’s meeting. All the ppl who believe in science & know what’s happening is unsafe but sit by saying nothing so they don’t have to rock the boat or endure any discomfort. 7/

Yes, the board hid last night’s vote in the agenda with vague wording so people wouldn’t know to come. However, community members, teachers and parents, who know abandoning science and fact is wrong, could have spoken up last month. Very few did.
