One thing I find annoying about ‘presence’ features in stuff like Discord or whatever: people being able to tell I am now online when I get up, groggily put my lenses in, put the kettle on, and flop down to check work emails at my PC
This not a call-out to someone in particular, just wanted to explain something that might seem rude to people with different sociability levels or whatnot

I need my morning tea to become awake
The presence indicator the way people often use it feels like ‘I walk into a communal space and people react by greeting me’ and no, that is not how it works online

My status going green does not mean I am ready for small talk and I am sure I am not the only one
I think my *real* gripe with greetings is that you are expected to respond and it feels impolite to not do that, and if the software has read receipts it gets even worse because the other party *knows* you saw their greeting
