I saw someone mention pillow fort and remembered it existed and apparently they are still trying to get it up and running again but then I saw this in reply to one of their tweets
I gotta ask...why? Like...for what? What audience do you actually think is going to be there?
People aren't going to flock to there just like they haven't to mastodon or any of the numerous alternatives that have tried and died. Twitter worked because there wasn't anything exactly like it at the time so people used it, you're not gonna convince them to leave it now.
It's the same feeling I get when people talk about making youtube competitors.
Like...no, you're not. You're not gonna come even close. The amount of money it costs to host video on that scale isn't feasible for some smaller national GDPs, let alone 5 people making a website

And it's gonna be the same with most social media that pops up, it'll either grow too big too fast and will buckle because it was never built to handle it, or there's not enough money TO build it up to handle it
Or it'll be a small, obscure thing that people remember sometimes

Hell, I have 2 mastodon accounts and literally only just remembered it existed typing this thread. I haven't been on there in years.
If you're making something and want an audience, the shitty, sad truth of it is you've gotta just...hope that you get lucky with the algorithm, cause moving to another platform that no one is using is definitely no better.
