I consistently see people pushing for Election Day as a national holiday as a means of voting reform, but I've always wondered how much of an effect it would actually have (thread)
If you look at other national holidays, most stores and restaurants stay open (with the exception of Christmas and Thanksgiving)
That means that a lot of workers in the service sector will still have to work
Workers in the service sector also tend to line up demographically with those who tend to vote less (younger, lower income)
This is not to say I am opposed to the concept, I'm just wondering what effect it would have
this thread was admittedly at least partially inspired by my experience working a service job on a federal holiday, which was usually hell
