i’m going to talk about the unrealistic and frankly impossible expectations twitter puts on teenagers, because holy fuck this site is literally a toxic wasteland
(long thread)
(long thread)
i’m gonna start this off with saying i am no mean disregarding or trying to invalidate everything happening in the world. it’s important for everyone to be informed and to help out as much as they can, but twitter seems to forget a lot of us are 14-17 years old and can’t do much
of course the things happening are important and relevant to (namely american) society and politics, especially the corrupt and racist nature of the police departments around the country that continue to kill innocent poc because of a prejudice.
but who the hell decided to +

make teenagers feel responsible for this?
a lot of us can’t vote, most of us can’t drink, and twitter expects us to be out on the frontlines of protests, getting tear gassed and shot with rubber bullets, in the middle of a global pandemic.
do you see how impossible that is?

twitter expects teenagers to rt every single thread about the problems happening in this world, to donate to all the gofundmes threads they see, to sign every petition and tirelessly call government officials in hopes of maybe, just maybe, making a difference in the way things +
are run.
does twitter know that change takes years? we’re not going to be able to fix the issue of racist police officers in a week, or unrestricted gun access leading to shootings in a month. that’s just not possible
so when kids see these frankly depressing stories on the +

tl every day for days upon weeks upon months, don’t you think it gets to them? a feeling of “i should be doing more” when what they should be doing is focusing on school and their lives so that they can be successful and have the opportunity to help things at a higher level
this isn’t to say that the inherent racism of the american court system doesn’t affect today’s youth, because it does, and we should all at least have some base knowledge of it. but asking teenagers to shoulder the responsibility of saving a man on death row is, quite frankly, +
disgusting.
adults on this app will get so upset when they see 13, 14, 15 y/o’s not talking about the latest deadly hate crimes, when the adults on this app are the ones who are more likely to be able to change things and help the affected.
telling literal teenagers to die

when they tweet about their interests or the reason they got the app in the first place instead of the current social, political, and economic issues is immature and disgusting
of course we should be trying to save those who need to be saved, avenge those unfairly killed, and +

help those disadvantaged, but there’s only so much a kid can do before it all starts to pile up and become too much
to the kids: it’s okay if you need to take a break, if you need to play a game instead of constantly trying to help. you can do that. take care of yourselves
