Around 150 gathered at Salmon Springs Fountain tonight for a vigil to mourn the death of 20-year-old Daunte Wright.

“You cannot work for the system and tear it down.” Demetria Hester says to the crowd. “We’re here because a young man died!”
A police officer shot Wright yesterday, Sunday, April 11, in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota during a traffic stop.

In the body cam footage, released today, the officer can be heard yelling "Taser! Taser!" even as she holds a handgun.
The shooting, recently ruled a homicide, happened less than 10 miles from the courtroom where Derek Chauvin is on trial for the May 2020 death of George Floyd, after Chauvin kneeled on his neck for nearly nine minutes, long after Floyd became unresponsive.
The Salmon Springs vigil is expected to wrap up around 7:30 pm. There’s another vigil in progress in Laurelhurst Park, expected to go until 8 pm.
Laurelhurst Park has around 200+ attendees and a vigil with lit candles. Blankets, kids and dogs are spread across the grass. Laurelhurst as a meet-up place generally has a pretty strong family feel.
Could now put the crowd over 300. The vigil looks particularly magical at this hour. There’s a little woodwind instrument band playing softly.
With chants of “Say his name, Daunte Wright!” the massive group pulls together around the vigil.

Holding a homemade banner that reads “Justice For Daunte Wright,” the march is underway.
The group easily fills Burnside, marching East to the Multnomah County Sheriffs Office.

Motorcycle police drive past, flashing their lights ahead of the crowd.

As the march arrives, two police cars have bright lights trained on the road. The crowd sets off a couple fireworks.
There’s a dumpster on fire, burning in front of the MCSO. Crowd is chanting “If Black lives matter then prove it!”
Although the majority of the crowd is facing the west entrance of MCSO, approximately 15 people with umbrellas were standing by the east driveway.

Officers shot them with less lethal munitions like this big foam bullet, which we picked up off the sidewalk:
A protester, wearing black bloc, sprinted across the MCSO courtyard and broke two small windows on the building exterior.
