At a special showing of Apocalypse Now at the Dome, a few decades ago, the sound of the helicopter started at the back, then circled around and crossed the front when the help passed by…. https://twitter.com/DEADLINE/status/1381759778519670789
…and then did it again. And then the sound of another helo started up in the back, and flew around in the other direction….
…and then they both crossed on the screen, synced to the sound, and flew around again….
…and when the movie finally ended, Walter Murch came out to speak, and got a standing O. At the Dome, the brilliant sound guys could get a standing O.
We always sat in the center, one row forward of the aisle that arced across the middle.
My family would take days off to see the first shows of certain movies. I saw, at the Dome, first run: WarGames. Superman II. Heavy Metal. Fire and Ice. At least a couple of the Star Treks.
Everything that’s Arclight today, that was all parking lot. We waited in a lot of lines in that parking lot.
1970s and 1980s Los Angeles, for big screens with good sound, you had the Mann Village and the Avco in Westwood, the ABC/Cap Cities in Century City, the Chinese, and the Dome. If it was something with fireworks, you hoped it opened at the Dome.
