“Darn’ tootin’ it is!" a Sons of Confederate Vets wrote posted alongside a copy of Gov. Reeves' proclamation. “It’s official-April is Confederate Heritage and History Month in our state of Mississippi and we observe it with pride!"

As Gov. Tate Reeves signed the bill retiring Mississippi's Confederate-themed state flag last summer, he acknowledged "the pain that some of our neighbors felt when they looked at our flag."

I feel it necessary at this point to note that 73% of Mississippians voted to adopt our new state flag in November (keeping the old Confederate-themed flag wasn't an option, but some supporters of it hoped to prevent the adoption of a new one at all). https://www.mississippifreepress.org/6731/mississippi-votes-to-adopt-new-state-flag-affirmatively-shedding-confederate-symbol/
