With the Haunted Mansion receiving minor updates, the conversation has once again arrived at what should be done about the hanging scene within the stretching room. Does it make light of suicide or help to create an “aura of foreboding” that so many fans love? https://twitter.com/toddmartens/status/1381704974778789889
Disney officially commented that no decision has been made at present. With so many attractions being updated to modern standards, it is inevitable that the haunted mansion come under some scrutiny. It is a complex situation and I do not envy anyone making the decision.
The Haunted Mansion is filled with “gallows humor”, something that has been within the attraction from its inception. When analyzing the hanging scene, the intent is to show something horrific while undercutting it with levity. This is something the attraction does consistently.
Ultimately, the biggest problem is guests themselves screaming or laughing during the sequence. This is also done in the face of one of the attractions more horrific moments. But does this equate to making light of suicide? I would argue, no.
The ghost hosts “there is always my way” is played on the edge between horror and comedy. While I’m sure some may see it as having no place in a Disney park, the attraction itself makes light of death in an effort to normalize it and view it without fear.
The attraction is designed to let guests come face to face with death and the supernatural. It plays it’s cards right and remains balanced, showing horror while not seeking out to terrorize the viewer. It’s a very delicate balance, that the Imagineers have managed to pull off.
No official decision has been made at this time and this is just my personal thoughts and opinions on the matter. We should always be critical of our entertainment and be welcome to informed discussions around the topic at hand.
