thread about #SisyphusTheMyth :
I enjoyed the drama despite its obvious flaws. I think we can all agree that it was not a perfect drama but I enjoyed it & it's enough.
the ending created divisive response but for me, it was perfect, it definitely made me love the drama more.
I think the divisive response is manly because of how the drama was marketed and how we all approached it, especially after seeing the trailer.
First, I thought it will be a sci-fi centered show & that there will be no romance at all. But then I saw the first two episodes.
I mean there is a wedding scene, so definitely romance was on the cards. I still don't know why ppl were confused about this.
I was curious about the title of the show & learned about the myth of sisyphus. You don't need to be a genius to understand that they were in a time loop.
Also have you seen who directed this ? the PD is Jinhyuk, I have seen his works and know what kinda of shows he likes to make. So, I immediately knew that at the heart of the show, there will be a love story. After all, Sigma did ask to Tae Sul : Is it the girl or the world?
I have issues with this PD & I think that if it was in the hands of another director, the drama would have been much better. The main problem of this drama is the directing and the editing. It was clearly badly done. Some episodes were great but others were such a let down.
The director's job is to have a clear vision and set a mood. There were so many props, editing mistakes, and as a viewer, I noticed it directly. Viewers have changed & nowadays, we are more demanding, we notice everything. And in a show like this, details are the key.
So you can't be sloppy. I almost dropped the drama bc of this, & only continued because I trusted the cast.
For me, the director should have gone for a much darker tone, especially concerning SH's scenes in the future. And the editing should have been much tighter than it was.
The drama should also not have lasted 16 episodes. It's too long especially for this kind of story. It should have been a drama with 12 episodes only. & I think Kdramas in general are headed towards lesser episodes & I'm here for it.
No point of dragging the story for the sake of lasting 16 episodes.
The other main problem is the storytelling. From what I have gathered, the writers are rookies. And honestly, it shows.
Sigma's plan was to make seo hae and tae sul fall in love. I'll be honest, I suspected it immediately after seeing the first two episodes. But maybe, it was because I looked up the myth & that I knew we were in a loop.
But I know some ppl took more time in grasping this.
And that's when you know the writers have failed at their job. You don't reveal this in the last two episodes, it's a stupid thing to do and it's maybe one of the reasons why the drama did not perform well domestically.
I know that the drama was severely criticized for the actions scenes in the first four episodes. SH & TS escaped the control bureau and the shooter without a scratch when they could have been easily shot down.
When you don't know where the show is headed to, you just find this stupid and wonder why the hell these scenes are for. The first four episodes are important for the viewer to understand the story. But the show takes too much time in telling us anything. No wonder ppl dropped it
But I continued it bc I trust the cast. Let me talk quickly about the CGI bc im still mad at the production. I know the rope scene lasted few seconds but like REALLY? you give us good CGI for the airplane sequence but for the rope scene you give us this ? it's embarassing.
CSW & PSH did not deserve this. But thank god, it only lasted a few seconds. I think they could have escaped in a much better way w/o having to resort to the CGI.
That's where the director's, the production's fault lies.
If the writers had revealed things at the right time and not this late, I definitely think the viewers in general would have been more invested in the drama. Thus, the drama would definitely have been loved more.
Because let's be honest, the reason why Koreans and even internationals viewers continued watching it was only bc #ChoSeungWoo & #ParkShinHye were cast.
I read some Korean comments and know this for sure. Koreans trust these two actors and mostly watch every shows they're on.
Their chemistry was for me the biggest win of the show. #ChoSeungWoo is such a joy to watch. Whether or not the show is good, one thing is for sure, you know that no matter which character he will play, he will nail it.
#ParkShinHye was also good in this, and I loved that she challenged herself this time. I know she's been wanting to do actions scenes for a long time. She said it herself, people around her & even directors told her she had a round body & could not do actions scenes.
but their CHEMISTRY? it was perfect, they matched so well. Koreans call #ParkShinHye the chemistry-queen & honestly, they are absolutely right.
& seeing the BTS, I know they loved shooting the show together and it definitely shows on the screen.
the romance was well-done for me. It was not over the top & im thankful for it. I mean Sigma was not wrong, when you've always been alone all your life (TS lost his brother, SH grows up in a bunker), going through these life altering experiences with someone creates feelings.
#ChoSeungWoo used the word compassion during the press conference to describe their relationship.
He is so right when saying this (I say this but this man can never go wrong in my eye lol), they understand each other bc they know how it feels to be alone (especially in ep5)
and let's talk about the couch scene ! I'll be honest im thankful the drama happened just for this scene, #ChoSeungWoo doing romance is everything, I want him to do a full romcom now, his heart eyes should not be wasted.
Sigma was a good antagonist but his backstory should have been revealed much earlier. The writers should be thankful to #kimbyungchul, what a phenomenal actor! the way he played Sigma was exceptional, he brought all the nuances to this character. A good show needs a good villain.
and #Kimbyungchul definitely was a good villain.
special mentions for #sungdongil & #kimjongtae (SH's father), watching them act is such a joy. Some people are born to be actor and watching them, I really felt this.
I loved Seo hae's scenes with her father, they were one of the best parts of the show for me. The scene when he explains that he did not want to be a father but that after she was born, he changed his mind was exceptional. Wish we focused more on their relationship.
Now, the ending, personally I loved that the show decided to stick to its title. I think ppl forgot that Taesul saw his memories from the previous loop. While gaining his memories, he remembers also the time spent with Seohae during the previous loop.
He fell in love during the previous loop & he falls in love w/ her in their present timeline. He says it himself, he goes though this bc he wants to be with her.Without the uploader, he would never have met her and by creating the uploader each time, he hopes he gets to be w/ her
He hopes that by doing this several times, they finally succeed at defeating time, and finally be with each other. But when she's shot and says to him that she's fine and that it's time to stop this, when he sees her suffer, he understands that it's time to stop everything.
And that's when Taesul makes the decision to kill himself. Because he is #sisyphus, not matter what, there will be always something to stop them from being together.
They are not meant to be together. He tried to defeat time & his version of Seohae only exist if there is a war.
So, Taesul knows the only way to end their suffering is to kill himself. Seo Hae is bound to disappear no matter what, unless he makes the uploader. But she asks him to stop.
And he asks her to come find him no matter what, even if there is no future. And she tells him she will.
And for me the plane scene is definitely a dream. The reason why Tae sul created the uploader each time was to be with Seo Hae. But she is from the future and she only exists if he creates the uploader that will lead to a war.
He gets to be with her only after they both died.
Seo Have only exist in Tae Sul's memories and for me, they are sort of head towards heaven? this is my interpretation but I might be wrong.
He wanted to Hawaii with her after everything is over, and them being plane means they are going there, but Hawaii is their heaven.
And Sigma with the notebook is definitely a way for the writers to troll us. I think he is now harmless but will still be obsessed by Taesul. I don't think you can let go of this kind of obsession that easily when you've been stalking a person all his life.
I loved this kind of ending, it made a big impact on us & I thought about it several days after the finale. a younger me who love happy ending would have loved them end up together but an older me knows much better know, this was the only ending possible for this show. #Sisyphus
but for me, the fact the show focused on the regrets as the reason why ppl used the uploader and how sometimes a simple act of kindness is everything for someone is the biggest takeaway, it was meaningful for me #SisyphusTheMyth
I just know the show would have not been this good w/o this cast. the performance of this cast made it worth watching #SisyphusTheMyth
I know the show did not perform as well as expected in Korea and some ppl wonder why the cast took such roles but seeing the press conference & having followers these actors's careers, I sort of know why #SisyphusTheMyth
#ChoSeungWoo said that the focus on the regrets & the relationship between Seohae and Taesul, the compassion between them made him take the show.
He's been doing serious roles for so long & Tae sul was definitely a different character for him to play.
#ChoSeungWoo is a legend and he's very respected in SK. Stranger increased his popularity worldwide that's for sure, but I think #SisyphusTheMyth introduced him to another type of audience, who is not used to watch legal dramas. I love that he's getting more popular worldwide.
I've discovered #ChoSeungWoo when I was in high school while watching God's gift, and I fell for him. And Im pretty sure there are some many ppl who are discovering through #SisyphusTheMyth and are watching all his shows. Knowing he's getting so much love is making me so happy.
#ChoSeungWoo is a genius actor and an amazing human being. I know the show is not perfect and we want the best for him, but seeing all this love for him these past few weeks makes me so happy. #SisyphusTheMyth is doing great on Netflix. People will want to see more of him.
So they will watch his previous shows and that's why Im happy he took this role
as for #parkshinhye, I have followed her career since the beginning. I think it's the same for many of us, but she is an actress we all immediately knew when starting to watch kdramas. She's one of the actress considered as the pioneer of the Hallyu Wave
I know #parkshinhye gets so much hate on social medias, I have seen it so many times.
people says she can't act, she takes the same roles, or she is overrated, and she does not deserve her success.
I think people forget that k-actors do not make dramas primarily for the international audience but for the domestic audience. And South Koreans love #parkshinhye. She is the child actress who managed to get a successful adult career.
South Koreans love #parkshinhye, she starred in Stairway to heaven which was a hit, they watched her grow up through her shows. It definitely created a sense of trust in them. They tune in when she stars in a drama & to achieve this sense of trust for an actress is hard
And they love to watch her on screen. I don't think international audience realize how much #parkshinhye dramas have done extremely well domestically. This is the reason why she always gets casted by the biggest directors.
Especially after #Doctors, the drama achieved 20% ratings in South Korea. It's such a difficult thing to achieve in SK. The show focused on #parkshinhye character, I know the cast was really good but she was mainly the reason why the show was a success.
And I have been reading #parkshinhye interviews, I know she lacks confidence and she is aware of the criticism about her acting, about how ppl point out every time she does not deserve her success.
in 2016, she said #Doctors brought back confidence in herself in a speech.
and im glad that it did. but then #MemoriesOfTheAlhambra happened. And if you at least took enough time to get to know her, you would know how sad and frustrated #parkshinhye was during the shooting of this drama, she just did not say anything publicly about it.
Im pretty sure the writer of #MOTA mislead her and #parkshinhye did not expect her character to be this complacent. You have to remember she only received a script for the first episodes. Im pretty sure she expected her character to be more active but the writer failed her.
and the writer of #MOTA Song Jae Jung said it herself. You can find her declarations on the internet. And I hate that they used her popularity to hype up the drama.
And in the end, everyone just remembered her as the crying female protagonist.
And people use this role and her role in #theheirs to always say she cries and does not do anything else.
I have never seen an actress as hated as her on social medias. And it makes me sad bc honestly, she had a hard time after #MOTA, she definitely did not need this.
but I know that her mind changed, she almost did not took part in #thecall bc her role was similar as her previous character but she took it after the director changed the scenario. And for me, this means she is now more than ever opened to take more challenging roles.
And this is also why she took part in #SisyphusTheMyth, she wanted to action for so long and she finally did. So no matter what, this will be a win for her, the audience will definitely see a different version of her
and from seeing #parkshinhye interviews, I know she lacks confidence and she herself thinks she is not a great actress. She knows she's being typecasted. #SisyphusTheMyth is a way to show she can be much more than what people expect of her.
so yeah, im just excited for #ParkShinhye's career next phase. I hope to see her in more diverse, challenging roles bc for me, she is talented, she just needed to step out of her comfort zone. And im glad she realized it too.
for what it's worth, she is an amazing human being.
did not expect this thread to last this long lol
but really needed to say this because this show has been getting so much hate online and I will say I really don't understand how people still take the time to watch a show they hate and make threads about it.
So I wanted to give my take on why I liked the show and why I suspect it did not do as well as expected.
