Ramadan Mubarak!

I always get questions about what Ramadan is so I thought I would do a thread:

Muslims observe Ramadan one a year. Every year it moves up on the calendar. So this year it starts on the 13th. (Next year it will be roughly Apr. 3). It will last between 28-31 days. 1/8

So from crack of dawn to sunset, we do not eat or drink anything.

Yes, not even water!

This is our way of empathizing with poor people who do not have easy access to food and water. 2/8

This is also a time to get in touch with our spirituality.

This is a time to read the Quran more, to pray, to give to charity, and to be kind in our hearts, thoughts and speech 3/8

There are exemptions for people who cannot fast. If you are too young, too old, sick, need medication, pregnant, nursing, travelling or on your period (low iron levels and fatigue are dangerous). For those of age, you are expected to redo those missed days or give to charity 4/8

I always hear from people “I can never do this”. And you’re right. You can’t successfully. And neither could I without the spiritual tie. I laugh and think I couldn’t do intermittent fasting and for one month I basically do it. It’s the spiritual aspect behind it. 5/8

If you know of a Muslim who is observing Ramadan, you can wish them a Ramadan Mubarak, or a happy Ramadan.

And please feel free to ask respectful questions. We don’t mind. 6/8

Muslims may be very tired over the next few weeks. Just keep this in mind. Most of us just do it quietly and you’ll never even notice. Until we decline the bday cake at work lol.
